The Avengers
The Avengers is an action-picture that was released in 2012 and produced by Marvel Studios. The build up to this movie has been absolutely extraordinary. Marvel started to produce movies from these legendary comics, starting withIron Man in 2008. Since then, there has been a sequel to that film, in addition to films about the Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, with this film being the culmination of all of that. It did not disappoint one bit.
The only one of those films that I have actually seen are the Iron Man films, starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. This film pulled in all of the big players from those movies, starring Downey Jr., Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), Samuel L. Jackson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Chris Evans (Captain America), and Chris Hemsworth (Thor). Getting all of that star power together could create a volatile cast, but this one played pretty nicely with each other on the screen.
The plot revolves around Thor’s brother, Loki, coming to Earth and trying to use the top secret Tesseract to enslave and take over the human race. The Avengers eventually come together to defend the planet from this imminent and dangerous threat. The film was full of action and not very plot driven. The basic plot remained so throughout the film.
That being said, the action was a blast. There were people shooting at other people, there was hand-to-hand combat, there was extraterrestrial weapons being utilized. Brother battled brother, Avengers battled evil doers, Avengers battled each other. There wasn’t a moment that went by without some sort of exciting fight seen.
There were also large moments of humor. There was nothing inherently funny about this movie, but they went the route of throwing in some hilarious punchlines that had the audience in a complete uproar. It’s always nice to see that a movie isn’t afraid to poke some fun at itself.
The musical score was slightly lacking, but not so much that it became a bother during the film. Additionally, there was a moment towards the end of the film with the Hulk and Iron Man that kind of bothered me, but I won’t discuss it, in the interest of not spoiling the film for the viewers.
Overall, this movie is an incredible action flick, and could perhaps be the best movie released this year. I saw it in 2D, and that didn’t inhibit the film in any way. See it however you please to, but see it.
